February 2015 Newsletter

Meet some of our new FLC staff members

anthonWhat is your name? Anthony Okpaloafe

Where are you from?  Raised in London England, currently living in Cardiff wales, born in Austria Vienna, originally from Nigeria Africa.

What is your role at camp this summer? My role in the camp will be general counselor.

What activities are you excited to teach this summer? I am extremely excited to teach several activities such a football, basketball and athletics but must importantly I am massively excited to teach rugby to the young nippers.

What about these activities most excites you?  I think the activeness of the sports, the constant moving. And also the expert knowledge I have on these activities that will bring high potential of great learning and also great fun.

What three words best describe you? Cheeky, active and rather large.

If you could be any kind of food, what kind would you be and why? Sweet potato fries because they are extremely delicious and still very good for you, best of both worlds. Or I’d be a full rack of glazed BBQ ribs.

What does working at a summer camp mean to you?  Unexplainable, to go back to the country where I went to school when I was younger; during an extremely tough time for anybody, let alone a youngster and to make me feel as comfortable and upbeat as they made me would no doubt give me a fantastic warm feeling inside. I’ve made it so far in my sports especially rugby, and I wouldn’t have made it to that level without the coaching I received as a youngster in rugby camps my mum took me to. So I feel it’s only right to give back to the children across the world.

What about coming to Forest Lake are you most looking forward to? Very tricky question, I’m looking forward to a great amount of things. The one thing I am looking forward to the most despite the amazing weather or amazing American food or even the tight camaraderie that will  grow between the kids and fellow counsellors, is definitely the feeling I’ll no doubt feel when a youngster is pleased due to a new skill he/she learned. This is because I still remember the feeling I got when I first learned how to tackle or even catch a rugby ball correctly. Unexplainable emotion especially for a youngster!

If you could be a super hero, what super hero would you be and what would your super powers be? If I was a super hero I would be the hulk, because of my frame and stature. But if I had a super power I reckon I’d possess super speed. A former coach that one said to me, “Anthony one day everyone will catch up to you and you’ll just be the same size as everyone else”, he mentioned there’s nothing that speed can’t overcome. I’m now a winger in rugby and have been for six years. Am I easily convinced? Maybe, but he wasn’t lying.

nursWhat is your name? Liz Riegel

Where are you from? Brewster, New York

What is your role at camp this summer? 7-week Nurse

What three words best describe you? Caring, creating, fun loving

If you could be any kind of food, what kind would you be and why? Popcorn, because no one can be in a bad mood while having popcorn.

What does working at a summer camp mean to you?   It’s helping campers develop skills, self-esteem, confidence, and helping them be happy, especially in the kind of world we live in today where there is a lot of pressure on all of us to feel like we have to be a certain way. You can help campers come to a place where they can be who they want to be. Camp is a place where you can really examine yourself in another setting than the one that you’re usually in, so being away from your usual friends and your usual home and being away from technology, it kind of helps you to discover who you really are.

What about coming to Forest Lake are you most looking forward to? Meeting all the staff and the campers.

If you could be a super hero, what super hero would you be and what would your super powers be?  CALADRYL GAL, Super Power: ability to stop all bug bites from itching.
