We’re thrilled to announce that this Spring Alumni Spotlight features someone whose Forest Lake journey spans nearly a decade—as a camper, LIT, counselor, and still a familiar face around camp today. If you’re lucky, you might catch him back on property during a weekend, helping out with weddings and events or reconnecting with old camp friends like no time has passed.

We managed to pull him away long enough to answer a few questions, and let’s just say…his story is packed with classic FLC moments, meaningful mentorship, and the kind of growth that sticks with you long after the summer ends. From Lake Placid trips to creating new camp traditions, his impact is still felt today.

You guessed it… GEORGE POTTERTON!

1. George, thank you so much for taking the time to fill out our questions. We know you’re not spending your summers full-time at camp anymore—so where do you call home these days?

I’m currently living in Closter, New Jersey.

2. What years did you attend FLC, and what are some of your most vivid memories from your time at camp?

I attended FLC as a camper from 2011–2015, was an LIT in 2016, and later returned as a counselor in 2019 and 2021. Some of my most vivid memories came from my LIT year—playing basketball against ADK for the plaque, volunteering in Lake Placid during the Ironman, and helping create the Lake Trail.

3. What were your favorite camp activities? Were there any particular experiences or challenges that influenced your personal growth?

My favorite activities were ultimate frisbee and archery. I had never done either before camp, and I always enjoyed both participating as a camper and running them as a counselor. Those experiences helped me become more open to trying new things and maintain a positive attitude toward anything thrown my way.

4. Looking back, which counselors or mentors at FLC had the biggest impact on you, and why?

My LIT counselor, David Menard, had one of the biggest impacts on me. He was incredibly supportive, and we spent a lot of time during my final summer talking about everything I had accomplished and how important FLC was to me. He played a big role in inspiring me to come back one day as a counselor.

5. From your time at FLC, what values did you carry with you into your adult life?

Confidence and leadership. Camp taught me how important it is to connect with others, be friendly, and learn from the people around you. Those experiences helped me grow both personally and professionally.

6. If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Have more confidence, be yourself, and don’t worry so much about what others think—especially at camp, where you can be whoever you want to be.

7. What are you up to now professionally?

I’m currently working as a Senior Production Assistant at the National Basketball Association, where I’ve been for nearly four years. In my role, I work with the social, digital, and original content teams creating and distributing stats, videos, and graphics across all social media platforms.

8. Outside of work, what are your interests or hobbies?

I’m really into golf—during the summer you’ll most likely find me out on a course somewhere in the NJ/NY area trying to become a scratch golfer. Otherwise, I’m either watching sports or traveling to visit friends across the country.

9. You’ve stayed really connected to FLC—what does that mean to you?

FLC has always been a special place for me, and I’m very grateful to still stay connected with everyone and come back whenever I get the chance.

10. Now for the most important question… Red or Blue?

Red Team all the way!
