January 2018 Newsletter

Meet some of our 2018 Staff

What is your name? Jessie Cooke

Where are you from? I am from North Wales in the UK.

What activities will you be involved in this summer? I am very excited to be the co-director of the horseback-riding program with Louise this summer. The stables have always been my favorite part of camp and the opportunity to lead the program is particularly special to me because it allows me to follow in the footsteps of my mum who was a “Horsey Girl” in 1988.

What three words best describe you? Friendly, caring and positive

What are you most excited to share with your campers this summer? I am most excited to be a part of helping campers to establish a similar love and respect for horses and horseback riding that I have enjoyed all my life.

If you could be any kind of food, what kind would you be and why? Chocolate – everyone loves chocolate!

If you could have any kind of super power, what would your super power be and why? As an aspiring vet I would love to be able to talk to animals so that I can better understand how I can help them. Furthermore, I reckon the camp horses would have some interesting things to say!

What about coming to FLC are you most excited about? I am so excited to reconnect with my FLC family – returning and new.

How many summers have you been coming to FLC? This will be my third summer at FLC: I was a general counselor in 2015 and 2016. I loved every moment of these two summers at camp and I am so excited to be able to return this year to co-direct the riding program.

If you could be any kind of food, what kind would you be and why? Sweets or ‘candy’ because they’re simply just the best!

What’s your name? Laura Cooke

Where are you from? I’m from a little farm in North Wales, and I’m currently at University in London.

What activities will you be involved in this summer? This summer at FLC I’m going to be a general counselor. I’ll be helping out at the lake and lifeguarding and I’ll be wherever sports are being played (lacrosse is my favorite, though!)

What three words  best describe you? I’ve asked my friends about what 3 words best described me and when I suggest that I was “funny” the general response was, “You aren’t funny!” So there we go, 3.5 words that best describe me, “I’m not funny”. Well, I am also positive and even a bit energetic! I guess I cannot limit it to 3 words!

What are you most excited to share with your campers this summer? My sister, Jess, is a veteran FLC staff member, and she will be going back to camp this year again. I cannot wait to tell the campers lots of funny stories about my sister and me growing up. Also, I am thrilled to get the opportunity to quash the rumor that she is a member of the royal family. Lying is wrong. 🙂

If you could be any kind of food, what kind would you be and why? If I were a food… tricky question! I decided to employ the help of the loyal internet quiz. I did 5- here are the results 1. cupcake 2. ice cream 3. potato pancake 4. curry 5. macaroni & cheese. In conclusion, I’m basically any guilty pleasure food perhaps because I’m such a treat…  (apart from a potato pancake, which I have no idea what that is). Another conclusion from the quizzes: I clearly have far too much time on my hands.

If you could have any kind of super power, what would your superpower be and why? Super power is really easy. I study Classics so I know my ancient heroes like the back of my hand. There are so many choices: Hercules, Jason, Perseus, Achilles? My answer- I’d be a hero like Odysseus. Odysseus is known, not for his superhuman strength, but his ability to stand back from any challenging situation and use his noggin to puzzle things out. Whether it’s helping the Greeks to sack Troy or escaping from the grasp of a man-eating Cyclops, Odysseus uses his brain power and his wit to overcome anything and protect those around him. Sounds pretty good to me.

What about coming to FLC are you most excited about? I’m so excited about being able to spend my summer outdoors! Loads of my friends have work internships lined up for the summer, where they will be stuck in stuffy offices. I’ll be roaming the beautiful grounds of FLC with absolutely marvelous company. What’s not to be excited about?! Also, it’s my first ever time working at a summer camp, so that’s really exciting.
