Veteran Staff Member Reflections

My first summer at camp was in 2016.  Driving up to camp for my first time that summer, I had no idea what to expect or what was in store for me.  Looking back now, coming to FLC was one of my best life choices.  Camp is truly special to me because it was at FLC in the Adirondacks that I discovered my love of being in outdoors, which is a huge part of my life today.  For me, camp helped me decide what I wanted to do with my life. Coming to camp for the first time I really didn’t have a plan after college, but after leaving my first summer I went back to school and switched major from business to education. Camp helped me realize that my passion is to work with kids and ultimately it led me to want to become an elementary school teacher.

FLC has afforded me so much.  While at FLC I have made lifelong friendships with some truly amazing people. I have also been exposed to opportunities that I never thought I would try or even enjoy. That is FLC, a place that provides opportunities that many people wouldn’t have the chance to try otherwise.

Campers go after things at camp in really amazing ways.  A few of the activities I have seen campers gravitate towards are activities like horseback riding, learning how to sail/boat on Forest Lake, and even some of our shooting sports like rifle and trap.  Camp also has a funny way of shaping you for the better without you even realizing it. It’s amazing to see campers and counselors grow so much in such a short period of time throughout the summer. For me being away from camp means that I am counting down the days until I get to go back and enjoy the beauty that FLC has to offer. – Andy Menard (FLC Staff Member)
