A Summer to Remember- Reflections from a 1st Year Counselor- Anna Genders

DSC_0377cabin 3Forest Lake Camp is a home away from home that has the ability to do amazing things for anyone who is willing to commit to jumping in with both feet, without holding back. This past summer was my first summer as a camp counselor at FLC. Coming from England, I was nervous about the whole experience. Many counselors start as strangers and soon they are a group of great friends who turn into friends for life.

DSC_0593Everyday at FLC brings new challenges and great experiences that will stay with you forever. The beautiful surroundings of the Adirondack Mountains make it easy to get out of bed every morning and once reveille is called the entire camp comes to life. The campers are always eager to start the day, especially in the mess hall at breakfast, which is filled with excitement and camp songs that I loved to be involved in.

Activity periods were so great for me, because I felt really comfortable teaching the activities I love and can shine in. To pass those skills and enthusiasm on to the campers was always so great. Soccer was my number one! There are also many opportunities to be apart of at FLC. For example, I never thought I’d get the chance to assist at the rifle range. Under the expert instruction of Gary, our rifle director, I had the incredible opportunity to fire a rifle at the range. Another great thing about activity periods at FLC is getting the chance to spend time with the girls from other cabins; FLC is like a family where everyone knows everybody.

Each day at FLC brings something new and fun and I am so glad I had the opportunity to spend my summer at FLC. Evening activity was such a great part of the day. Whether it was capture the flag or being dressed up by your campers and acting silly in fun costumes, we always had the best time together.

FLC is a brilliant camp for both campers and staff. We are there because we want to be, doing the things we love the most, with people that mean so much to us. There is honestly no other place I would rather spend my summer than at FLC. In the weeks I spent at FLC I met some of the greatest people who I now regard as friends for life. The spirit and community of FLC is really amazing and is what makes campers and counselors want to come back summer after summer! -Anna Genders
