Forest Lake Camp offers a number of different waterfront activities, some of which include swimming, boating, rowing, funyaks, canoeing, fishing, kayaking, and sailing on Forest Lake, our own private spring-fed lake. We also offer water skiing clinics and white water rafting offsite. Campers visit the waterfront at least once each day for a general swim period. They might also visit a second time for a boating activity or other instruction.
Forest Lake has a completely natural 1.5 mile shoreline broken only by the camp’s sandy beach, beach volleyball court, and dock system. The water quality is tested regularly by the Adirondack Lake Commission to confirm its high quality.
We feel strongly that the more skilled a camper becomes around the water, the safer and more comfortable they will be practicing water-based recreation. Our waterfront activities are considered “lifetime” activities to be enjoyed for years to come.
In order for campers to participate in the range of aquatic activities, each must demonstrate a level of swimming proficiency through our deep water test. Swim instruction is scheduled for campers who request it (or whose parents request it), or those who don’t satisfy the Camp’s basic swim proficiency.
Fishing has become increasingly popular over the years. Bass and trout are plentiful, and if the catch is large enough our professional kitchen staff is willing to serve up the daily catch for your cabin that evening.
We offer a ½ day water-ski clinic with expert instruction for those campers who wish to learn a new activity or to simply practice their skills. After getting the opportunity to ski many campers love to go tubing at the end of the day. There are also opportunities to try wakeboarding or trick skis. This clinic is an additional option during enrollment and is available at least once every two weeks per camper, depending on availability.
The enjoyment of waterfront activities isn’t limited to Forest Lake. Once a camper accomplishes a requisite level of competence, they can participate in camp trips and competitions. We send out canoeing, fishing, and kayaking trips to local rivers and lakes, which are carefully selected for the appropriate safety and competence level of the Forest Lake camper group. These are wonderful opportunities to apply the skills learned at camp.
