Music has always been a part of FLC’s culture, often heard streaming out of both camps’ head office speakers during transitions between activity periods or during free time at camp. Campers skip to the beat of their own drum at camp and dance periods only further compliment and encourage this expressive and creative outlet campers of all ages yearn to feel and know.
This summer the FLC dancers participated in their 2nd annual dance competition at neighboring Camp Echo Lake. Head dance instructor Gemma Turanski, with the support of her assistant Chloe Barraclough, led the FLC dancers in a number of choreographed routines that energized all of girls’ camp. The dance team performed in the competition to the awesome song, #Thatpower, showing incredible discipline, focus and in-sync movement. Their enthusiasm was the strongest and certainly felt by all the judges.
The girls dance pavilion was lit up all summer long as campers of all ages shared their vision and creative ideas during dance periods. Hip-hop, ballet and zumba were just a few of the dance styles that campers and staff experienced this summer. Dance is an ever popular activity in both boys and girls camp and Gemma and her fellow dance instructors maintained its value and its energy in 2017. With the return of Gemma in summer 2018 we are confident that new moves and choreographed dances are on the horizon for so many fortunate campers!
Gemma shares a bit about what she is thankful for as she reflects back on her time teaching dance in summer 2017….
I am thankful for having had the opportunity to teach dance at FLC this past summer. It was such an amazing experience that I will never forget. I believe that CONFIDENCE, and especially SELF CONFIDENCE, are so important and I believe that I am helping people gain that through dance classes by giving them the opportunity to be themselves, put their own little spin on what we are doing and making each class as fun as possible. I am also thankful to be coming back next year to teach dance to returning and new campers. -Gemma Turanski
